Whiskey’s Journey: A Surgery Against the Odds

A noticeably strong odor. Undesirable behavioral shifts. When Whiskey was brought to us at the clinic, his owners requested surgical castration. With several other clinics declining to perform the procedure due to technical risks and challenges, we knew we had to help.

Case Overview

Whiskey is a sweet 6-month-old sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) introduced to us for help with elective surgery. His owner noticed a strong odor associated with urination and expressed concern about a prominent scent gland on his head.

Additionally, Whiskey’s reproductive behaviors were becoming increasingly undesirable. Despite these challenges, Whiskey remained positive, bright, and alert with a healthy body condition and no significant abnormalities identified.

Diagnosis & Decision

Dr. J prioritized a complete preoperative evaluation, including laboratory testing. This was done to ensure Whiskey’s safety and suitability for general anesthesia and surgery.

Given sugar gliders' species-specific sensitivity to anesthesia, a personalized protocol was tailored for Whiskey. This included precise dosing and complete monitoring to minimize anesthetic risk.

The Procedure

Castration was performed using a routine surgical approach. Because of Whiskey’s small size and delicate anatomy, Dr. J and his team worked with careful and gentle tissue handling. The procedure was completed smoothly, without any intraoperative complications.

Whiskey received all-around postoperative care, including supportive management, thorough monitoring, and a custom-made Elizabethan collar to help with recovery.

The Road to Recovery

Whiskey was hospitalized for several days until he was ready to go home. Recovery went on smoothly, and his overall condition improved significantly. At a follow-up checkup several weeks later, we observed that Whiskey had healed well.
