Medo’s Journey: From a Small Lump to a Life-Saving Diagnosis

A lump that seemed harmless. A problem hidden beneath the surface. When Medo came to us for a routine visit, we uncovered something concerning. What appeared as a small mass became a powerful reminder of how checkups reveal what eyes cannot see.

Case Overview

Medo, a 7-year-old French Bulldog, visited our clinic for an oral health consultation. However, Dr. Ines immediately noticed a hidden cutaneous lump located on the left side of Medo’s body.

This case reinforces a vital clinical principle: no mass should be ignored without proper diagnostic investigation. We then took Medo in for a proper diagnosis.

Diagnosis & Decision

Dr. Ines performed a Fine Needle Aspiration, a quick and minimally invasive procedure that gives us a lot of information about the situation. The sample was then sent to IDEXX Laboratories (UK) for cytological analysis.

Medo’s mass was a mast cell tumor, which can be unpredictable. Some remain mild and localized, while others behave aggressively. Our team proceeded to do bloodwork, diagnostic imaging, and surgical planning. We had to be precise.

The Procedure

The surgical goal was clear: we had to make an incision that was enough to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. Although the mass was small, the incision needed to be a bit larger.

Dr. Ines carefully explained everything to the owner, from the procedure to post-operative care. With a clear plan in place, we proceeded with the surgery.

The Road to Recovery

Following surgery, Medo recovered well under close monitoring. Clear margins were achieved, and his incision healed as expected. He handled the post-operative period with the same calm and collected spirit he showed throughout treatment.

Medo Today

Today, Medo is continuing to recover well. He remains comfortable, active, and happy at home with his family. Even with the shocking news, Medo’s family had a lot of trust in Dr. Ines’ capabilities and in her reassurance that she would do everything to ensure Medo’s safety and a fast recovery.
